Nothing is more important then FAITH-the one great moving force that we can neither weigh in the balance nor test in the crucible! It was through faith and prayer that the House of Prayer cane into existence. The 85 Year history of The House of Prayer is a most inspiring one based on faith in God. A detailed history can not be related, therefore a condensed history is hereby given. The House of Prayer began in 1930 as a house to house mission church. Seeing a need for a more permanent edifice, the Rev. Mrs. Ophelia Taylor and the Rev. Mrs. Ida Moore secured a store front building located on Fulton St. Rev. Anna Cops was called to run the first revival. The revival attracted new people in the community and the mission grew. At this point Bishop Diggs came to Warren and organized The House of Prayer with five members. Rev. Williams of Youngstown Ohio was the first Pastor of the church The church was named "The House of Prayer" by the late Bro. Ross Rev. Mrs. Pear Haddon and her husband Jesse were the first members of the church. The children of Rev. Opelia Taylor and Rev. Pearl Haddon were the first sunday school members. Mother spencer, the daughter of Ophelia Taylor is the eldest living original member. The late mother Emma Williams organized the first usher board and served as president for several years. Under the leadership of Rev. Walker, assisted by Rev. Pearl Hadden, the church began to raise funds for a church building. Under Rev. W.W. Houston's leadership, The House of Prayer was financially blessed and a house and parcel of land was purchased on Dawson St. This land was to be the location on which the new church was to be erected. Rev. WW Houston and the members worked cooperatively and made plans to conduct various fund raising projects to liquidate the mortgage. Time lapsed, the mortgage was liquidated, the house house was torn down to make room for a new house of worship. The latter was all for naught, because the city of Warren, Ohio building department refused to grant the church a building permit. Finding themselves in a great dilemma, without the possibilities of bringing their vision and dream to fruition, the House of Prayer rented a former Baptist Church building on Wick Street S.E. Shortly after moving to Wick Street The House of Prayer purchased the property for $3,500.00 The membership, having a church home, completely renovated their new church home for their comfort, pleasure and salvation. The following Ministers have all attributed to the Growth of the Church: Rev. Mrs. Ophelia Taylor, Rev. Ida Moore, Rev. Wilken, Rev. Walker, Rev. Odam, Rev. Portley, Rev. Mrs. Della Skipper, Rev. Houston, Rev. Watson, Rev. Odell McCullum, Rev. Hagler, Rev. Cleveland Beasley, Rev. Luther Blackwell Sr., Rev. Dan Borden, Rev. Tommy Hall, Rev. David Gunther, Rev. Joe Williamson, Rev. Mrs. Pearl Haddon, God blessed the church and a number of people were saved and six brothers were called to minister to preach the Gospel. The members repaired the church, the took out the coal furnace and put in gas heat and a water fountain and an extra lot was purchased in the back of the church. In 1957 Rev. Odell McCullom was called to Pastor. Rev. McCullom had the church enlarged and purchased an organ, new piano and the church was re-decorated, He Pastored for seven years. Following Rev. McCullums pastorate were Pastor Hagler who made futher renovations to the church building, The Rev. Cleveland Beasley and the Rev. Luther Blackwell Jr. who became well known for his preaching and musical skills. In 1970 Mrs. Annie Caldwell, a former member of Second Baptist Church, joined the House of Prayer.
